In my opinion the family is the most important caregiver of the elderly and person with disabilities, in the United States the governments know this situation and have created many programs in around the country that to aid the caregivers.
These programs and agencies can provide accurate information to the elderly and the caregiver on where to get help for a better life and free time to the caregiver of the family. I think the initiative of the United States to create these programs, to assist the family of the elderly and the elderly to live more comfortably should be an example in other countries.
I agree with you Nestor, family plays an essential role in taking care of their elderly parents and other older family members. Additionally, it is necessary that our government develops a more effective plan to provide care for our senior citizens.
I consider that the video clip showed is really a great effor to shaow how the elderly people can be adequately cared of. In this case, they give us an idea about where to ask in case you need help somebody who really needs to be attended if you are un USA, so they present some programs to assist elderly and family.
I also agree with Nesotr on his opinion. It is important to realize that in the video they give importance to family care too, In the other hand, the USA Government's programs, are a very good example of organization in pro elderly people. Others country should be attended to these kind of programs and it could try to emulate it.
We know that family is the society base, so, working togther family can be responsible about older members, and younger's too. If somebody is sick or in a bad economical situation, the rest of family should help them.
Finally, if there were possible to follow the Chinese culture when the elderlys have always been honored and respected by the young, then the family situation would be different.
Caregivers is people very important because they keep live many values like love, devotion and united for our elderly relatives; however family composition is changing, many years ago different generations lived in the same house but now is complete different because people get married more older and have less children, then families are smaller and sometimes they works and live in different places, for these reasons probably they don’t keep a good communication with another members of family and elderly member pay the consequences.
I agree with Trina when she said the value of the family support in bad time and other circumstances, so, all members of families should understand that nothing can replace family role, and any government program will be efficient or successful without whole families’ participation. In despite of all effort of the US government there is still much to do
Finally the family must be close of their older members despite of their problems or differences between them and try to help themselves in the difficult times and enjoy the specials moments that life gives them because these moments never come back.
The video shows a real society problem. Most of the elderly sometimes feel they are alone, with nobody helping them to do their activities, taking care of their health and making some leisure activities. Governments have many responsibilities, because they don’t promote national laws or programs for the improvement of the old people expectations and recognize the importance of their knowledge to new generations. The better care we give to the elderly the longer they live. Particularly in Venezuela, many of the elderly are cared by their families, but in many cases they are in poverty and older people don´t receive the better care as they need. In the other extreme are rich families, and in this cases old people have very nice care but sometimes don’t receive the emotional care of their families. Governments have to create programs to improve elderly care creating health assistance, leisure activities or any other program to recognize the importance of elderly to the society.
Family is the most important support for elderly because they feel and appreciate that care. More and more people are getting old around the world, and today’s families are smaller with only one or two children. When you are a caregiver you have a big responsibility because you help other people to solve their problems.
Government´s help in financially terms is very important because sometimes it can be expensive, especially with medical treatments.
According with the video, people need to know that there are programs that benefit them, sometimes you don´t know about them, and I think the video was very interesting because I didn´t know that I´m a caregiver since I help my parents, neighbors, friends, even strangers in some different ways. You don´t know when you could need help, and I enjoy helping another people.
I agree with Lucy on the importance of the emotional fulfillment of elderly people, more than anything they need to know that their families care and want to receive affection and love. Evaristo’s comment refers directly to the video in which government programs are publicized. A lot of times people don’t join these programs ―and therefore, do not enjoy the benefits available to them― simply because they do not know that such programs exist, and that they are entitled to them.
To be able to count with a caregiver in the family is very important to elderly. I think, because our culture, Venezuelan people know that we can live with our parents until we decide to live independently, or are able to do it. There is not a specific age to live by our own. In some cases, couples even live in the house of their parents (or parent-in-law) after they got married. Besides, the contact makes they feel closer one to another; above all, if there are kids in the family, and the love each one feels for the other members of their family is bigger and bigger each time. As consequence, people are generally graceful and they are disposed to take care of their parents or their grandparents when they are old.
However, the difficulty of taking care of our older member of the family is higher when women, as well as the men, have to work outside of their home. In spite of that, I think, people at work places are still very considerate when they allow subordinated workers to take time off to give attention their elderly.
The biggest problem in our country, I think, is that elderly people neither are considered as a potential work class. Then, when people are used to work and be independent, and they are retired, without being previously taught to face their new live stage, their independence is affected strongly. Therefore, in my opinion, government has the duty to develop and promote policies and assistance programs in order to satisfy the elderly necessities respect to housing, feeding, education and occupation, recreation, among others, which can give response to the consequences of getting old, including benefits or considerations to those who play the caregiver role when elderly are really unable to manage on their own.
We have been exchanging different opinion about elderly and caregivers, getting focus in two points of view. First, Néstor introduced financial care as a topic of elderly and caregivers, showing examples from United States of American government and mentioned the family as the most important caregiver of the elderly and person with disabilities. I agree with Néstor and Trina about financial programs and family care. Finally, Lucy explains her point of view about emotional care, because many times elderly people feel that do not receive love from their families. I am completely agreed with her point. But, I want to introduce a new point of view, respect to their own personalities, elderly people need more than financial aid and people who take care of them, they need live with their things and friends, I mind, listening their old music, dance, play old table games, seeing old movies. They need to shear with people of their edge. For example, I had the opportunity to know a very good private association, called A.V.J (Asosiación Venezolana de Jubilados); it was in "Los Chorros", a good neighborhood in front of the Avila. Every day all members, elderly people, meet there to share food, music, dance, games, drink, jock, etc; it was a spectacular and amazing thing, enjoying elderly people feel happy sharing with their same people. I enjoined too much when I was to picked up my mother in law and drink a few ...,leasing their story about art, politic, sport, etc. I think all you guys are right, but just I wanted to tell my point of view, I think the solution is in our hands too, the social politic respond to all society in general and how we see our elderly people. Thank for give me the opportunity to share that we you. Félix
I agree with the video, family is the most important support for elderly people. Good for those programs for help them, they are necessary for caregivers. In our country this kind of programs are very little, I know only about the IVSS program and a little bit in local regions but they need to be improved.
My grandmother is 80 years old and almost all my family are her caregivers, we don't have any goverment help but some day we would need it, her medicines are very expensives and there is its importance.
I am very happy with the programs for elderly people in other countries; our goverment should follow their example.
Every one is aging and in the future we will need a caregiver, today we have a difficulty to get resources for help our elderly relatives and now we need to prepare for the future.
I browse in eldercare.gov and I can see all services availables there: Adult Day Care, Caregiver Programs, Case Management, Elder Abuse Prevention Programs, Financial Assistance, Home Health Services and more; are very much services; we need services like those here in our country, the old population is big.
Eric by indicating how you as a family are dealing with yor eighty year old grandmother, you summarized very well the situation of the elderly and their families in our country, as well as the lack of programs and services we have in comparison to other countries
